Peterborough has an extensive network of health services and wellness centers.  Health care professionals are drawn to the area to set up private practices.  This has been a result of Peterborough being recognized as a top destination for Ontario’s retired population. The city’s small-town feel, proximity to cottage country and laid-back pace made it the perfect place for all scales of retired living.  Top medical services and the health benefits provided from beautiful green spaces, combined with an emphasis on developing a range of living options for seniors, are making the city a magnet for retirees!

Peterborough has made establishing more affordable housing, quality regional health-care and accessible transit top priorities.  The city also has community centres geared specifically towards seniors, an important part of daily life for older residents.

The Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is a state-of-the-art regional hospital. For over a century it has provided quality health care, and serves a population of 300,000 people in Peterborough and the surrounding region.  The hospital holds a capacity of 494 beds, and is now one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Ontario!  The PRHC is also Peterborough’s largest employer with more than 2,000 staff, 370 physicians with privileges, and 600 volunteers.  Its extensive range of services includes specialized programs in renal, stroke, cardiac, cancer care and vascular surgery.  The PRHC is located at One Hospital Drive, near the intersection of Weller Street and Medical Drive.  http://www.prhc.on.ca/

A number of community-based organizations provide support services for older adults in the Peterborough Region.  The Peterborough Victoria Haliburton branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses provides community-based health services for older adults in the Peterborough area, offering adult day programs which provide social, recreational, and therapeutic activities for older adults who are frail, cognitively impaired, or isolated.  http://www.von.ca/en

Community Care Peterborough also provides a variety of services that enable older adults to live safely at home. These include transportation services, meal delivery services, and friendly visiting programs. Community Care Peterborough operates eight offices in the Peterborough region. http://www.commcareptbo.org/services.php
